The Fate of Drysdale

After destroying your foes in the valley, the party decided to attempt to rescue Drysdale. He was found barely alive in the cavern in which he was left. You managed to heal him sufficiently to return him to Fallcrest. The party left him with the monks of Correlon for healing and he was returned to full health. For your trouble the party earned experience and a healthy reward.

In Fallcrest the party leafed several things:

  • The playing card you hold appears to be one of the cards from the ancient artifact The Deck of Many Things. You learn that it particularly strange for you to be in possession of a angle card, as the ancient lore states that once a card from the Deck is drawn and used, the entire deck disappears from the Material Plane. This appears not to have happened the last time it was used. Why?
  • You have been advised to seek the counsel of Lord Padraig of Winterhaven who to learn more about the Deck and about Garmore Abbey. (Recall that you were sent on a quest to Garmore by the Aspect of Corrleon to foil the plans of Chaos that seem to be afoot there.)

The party journeys along the road to Winterhaven and stops at Garmore Abbey to have a look round. Approaching the gate of the ancient Abbey, you find the place rife with Orcs. Kjarten takes wing and scouts the environs. He finds a large Orc encampment in the remains of the old village of Garmore.

Scouting the old guard towers Kjarten discovers a storage phenomenon at one of them. Looking into the upper windows, the inside seems to be pristine and in a perfect state of repair as it would have been while the Abbey was in use. Exploring the tower from the outside reveals more oddities. The doors cannot be opened, and striking the towers seems to cause it to ‘bleed’. You suspect the tower may not exist fully in the Material Plane. Unable to breach the towers walls the party moves on along the Abbey walls.

Discovering a break in the wall, the party finds a Fey Grove occupied by an elf named Berrien Velfarren. Berrien is suspicious initially of what your intent at the Abbey is. He seems to quite upset although it is not entirely clear why. Kjarten and Hobbes eventually convince him that your intentions are genuine and he sends you to discover the original records of the groundskeeper of the Fey Grove. You set out exploring further and soon happen upon a clearing occupied by two Owlbears! The party defeats the Owlbears and exploring the shack they inhabit, find what appear to be the records sought by Velfarren.

Choices Await

You have now spent some months traveling and adventuring in the Nentir Vale. You have done well, and in the process you have made a powerful enemy in Shadowghast and a powerful potential ally in Corellon. You have rid the Chaos Scar of much evil and have destroyed two meteorite shards. In the process you have accumulated much experience and a significant amount of gold and treasure. You have lost adventuring companions and one of you has even suffered a fiery death, only to be resurrected again as your destinies have yet to be fulfilled.

Most recently you came face to face with your deeds as you were tricked into facing some of those who felt wronged by you. The leaders of the Chaos Scar were formidable, but once again you successes, albeit at great cost. Your onetime patron, Lord Drysdale was kidnapped and is now presumed dead. The ramifications of his death in Fallcrest have yet to be seen.

You have also recently been sent on a quest from Corellon to investigate and try to defeat the forces of Chaos at work in the northwest part of the Vale – near Garmore Abbey. You have also received a mysterious playing card which clearly has great power – the full extent of which is unknown to you. Now the time has come to make some choices about what to do next.

You may wish to do some or all of the following:

  • Attempt to discover the fate of Drysdale. If he yet survives, or if he is dead what will you do?
  • Learn more about Gardmore Abbey and its environs
  • Attempt to fulfill the quest set to you by Corellon
  • Learn more about this mysterious playing card you hold
  • Learn more about Shadowghast and his ultimate plans

Down, But Not Out

Shadowghast’s plan had worked. Not quite as well as he had hoped, he hoped to kill all of the wretches, but he would settle with sending that fool of a paladin to meet his maker. Perhaps his brainless companions will resurrect him? The very thought made him grin. He could waste their gold and get the pleasure of killing him all over again. Asmodeus would be very pleased with a former paladin as a slave for eternity. And that halfling. Oh how he wished that he could provide that halfling as a plaything to Lyrane. She would so enjoy his company. For a short while at least. He chuckled to himself at his own joke.

Still the adventurers lived, but the ritual upon the hapless elf was a success. Shadowghast thought about the enjoyment he would receive seeing his workmanship take its course. Adventurers always so eager for glory and never thinking about the consequences of their actions.

All the wheels were in motion…

Shadowghast Manor
Don't take a celestial steed into the basement

Plagued with guilt at bringing the wrath of Shadowghast upon the Woodsinger elves, the party felt an obligation to go after the captured folk and try to return them to their clan.

Upon entering Shadowghast manor the party was overcome by Shadowghast’s Iron Circle minions. With the help of Buttercup, Oliver’s celestial steed, most were defeated but one powerful denizen escaped down the stairs. Determined to follow, Oliver and Buttercup haeded down the stairs. Sensing a dangerous presence, Kjartan shouted out, but too late. The Tempest Glyph went off with an enormous peal of thunder, and Oliver was struck with its full force. Now, more cautious, the party continued downstairs and managed to defeat a whirling blades traps.

Rounding the corner, things went from bad to worse as a huge Bloodfire Ooze attacked without warning. The battle was fierce, but proved to be too much for a diminished Oliver. He succumbed to the ooze’s fiery aura and volcanic eruptions.

Determined to avenge his fallen comrade, Hobbes slunk further down the stairs to try to get the drop on Shadowghast and hopefully rescue the hapless elf. Stealthily (or not as it turned out) Hobbes crept round the corner and spied Shadowghast and a beautiful redhead in the midst of a ritual. Hobbes spied a blood soaked figure on top of an alter which he could only presume to be the elf captive. Overcome by the beauty of the redhead before him (and the stirring in his pants) Hobbes gave up his position in the shadows. Lyrane cast a charm in his direction and he found himself further dominated by her. With his will surrendered, Hobbes found himself unwillingly attacking his friends.

It was quickly becoming apparent, that in their weakened state, the party would be unable to defeat these foes and escape with their lives. They made the difficult decision to retreat, taking Oliver’s body back to Fallcrest for hopeful resurrection.

Days passed as the group recovered from their second painful encounter with Shadowghast. Not knowing what else to do, the companions headed back to the Harken Forest and the Woodsinger elves to yet try to obtain the dragon’s blood which is essential to the destruction of the meteorite’s shard. [[:Marros Lightouch]], the leader of the elves was certainly not pleased that the party had not returned with their kin. Not revealing what they suspected, the group insisted that they could yet recover the lost elf. They pleaded with Marros for any other tasks that could improve their standing with the elves. Swayed by Kjartan’s words, the elves told of the Daggerburg goblins that had long terrorized this part of the forest. They indicated that there was a known group of goblins nearby, and if the party could rid the area of these pests, it would certainly help to raise the estimation of the group in the eyes of the elves.

This the party did, and with great efficacy…

The Lost Library

Spending some time at home in Fallcrest the adventurers are summoned in haste by one of the adepts of the temple of Correlon who were studying the chaos shard that had been taken from Morgana the Priestess of Torog. The party examined the crime scene and Occam was shocked to discover that the mark of his former master was crudely painted on the wall of the temple by creatures unknown. Additional sleuthing made it evident that the culprits were a band of Kobolds. For what reason had they stolen the share? It seems unlikely that kobolds would have the slightest idea what to do with something as powerful as a chaos shard.

The party made some discreet inquiries in town and soon made their way to the kobold lair which was found in a cave deep in the Chaos Scar. Exploring the cave, the party found the kobolds but soon discovered that they were building a lair for a small brown dragon wyrmling. The kobolds were defeated but the wrymling managed to burrow into the ground and escape.

Further explorations into the cave revealed more kobold who were living in what appeared to have been a long abandoned library. After dispatching the kobolds the party learned that this library once belonged to the sorcerer Voran Earthmane. Oliver had previously learned about Voran when he dealt with a band of Bullywugs who had moved into Voran’s workshop. In the library Oliver discovered a scapr of writing (preseumably Voran’s) which read:

It is fitting that the lantern’s elemental flame grants access to my library; only the knowledge in these books has granted me the power to tame the elements. My understanding of the power of the meteor grows with each passing day, but the creature that its arrival has summoned will be difficult indeed to master. My experiments have shown the <unreadable> elemental runes should allow one to gain access to the creature.
I have only one chamber left to build, but it will be the most difficult of all. I am almost finished with the key—just one final enchantment and the battle standard will be complete.

In the corner of the library was an arcane portal. The party stepped through the portal and were immediately attacked by the a dragonborn and more kobolds. The party managed to kill most of the kobolds but two of them surrendered rather than losing their lives. After being questioned, the kobolds (Nibbik and Minnock) revealed that they had been paid to steal the chaos shard by the current occupant of the Vanguard Tower (the home of Occam’s former master). Although not possessing first hand information, they believe that a beholder currently occupies the Vanguard tower.

Voran’s inner sanctum had additional secrets to reveal. Under a locked hatch the adventures found what appears to be an enchanted dormitory with comfortable rooms for each person who enters. The party agreed that this would become their base of operations for further adventures in the Chaos Scar.

Also found, an enchanted lantern and enchanted chalk that allow entrance and egress from the inner sanctum.

A blog for your campaign

Every campaign gets an Adventure Log, a blog for your adventures!

While the wiki is great for organizing your campaign world, it’s not the best way to chronicle your adventures. For that purpose, you need a blog!

The Adventure Log will allow you to chronologically order the happenings of your campaign. It serves as the record of what has passed. After each gaming session, come to the Adventure Log and write up what happened. In time, it will grow into a great story!

Best of all, each Adventure Log post is also a wiki page! You can link back and forth with your wiki, characters, and so forth as you wish.

One final tip: Before you jump in and try to write up the entire history for your campaign, take a deep breath. Rather than spending days writing and getting exhausted, I would suggest writing a quick “Story So Far” with only a summary. Then, get back to gaming! Grow your Adventure Log over time, rather than all at once.
